ITIRELENG DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATIONAL PROJECT
Itireleng Development and Educational Project is an NGO established in 1988 to work towards building community institutions and develop their capacity to enable them to be active participants in poverty alleviation and the development of their own communities.
Itireleng seeks to empower the rural poor, women, youth and the uneducated to take control of their own lives through the following programmes; Land Access, use and Rights, Local Government and Service Delivery, Abet, Local Economic Development and HIV\AIDS.
The organisation’s main thrust is rural development. Its main aim is to facilitate the building of rural people’s organisations so as to make sure that community development is self sustainable through people’s efforts and people take ownership of their own development.
They also provide political and socio – economic educational programme to communities. The organisation also assists communities in partnership with Community Development Committees and other stakeholders like chief, indunas, ward councillors, ward committees, local municipalities and their stakeholders in rural development initiatives.
They further assist communities to lobby for resources which are not readily available from the communities e.g. working capital, skills etc. They raise consciousness for people to be aware of what is available at their own disposal.
At the core of their activities is the organisation’s tried and tested development approach the PPPA with all the projects being used as spring boards for means of livelihoods for the rural poor.
They regard education as the key to the success community initiatives and will continue to offer project management training for these community initiatives and where possible, technical skills training.
The organisation currently has the following programmes, which constitute their main activities:

- Local Economic Development
- ABET and HIV and AIDS
Areas of Operation
Itireleng Development and Educational Project operate in two districts, i.e. Mopani and Sekhukhune district. In Mopani district, IDEP operates in all five local municipalities, i.e. Ba – Phalaborwa Municipality, Maruleng, Greater Tzaneen, greater Letaba and Greater Giyani Municipality, while in Sekhukhune it operates in two local municipalities, Greater Tubatse and Fetakgomo Municipality.
Location
IDEP has its main office in Namakgale Phalaborwa; the main office is responsible for servicing areas under the Ba-Phalaborwa and Maruleng municipalities. It has three satellite offices; one at Bolobedu-Ramotshinyadi servicing areas falling under the Greater Letaba and the Greater Tzaneen municipalities, the other one is in Dzumeri servicing areas under the Greater Giyani Municipality. The third satellite office is in Sekhukhune District, situated at ga-Malekane Village servicing areas under Greater Tubatse and Fetakgomo municipalities.
